Thing 23 and me!

Well i have made it to the end and boy did it sure take me a long time to get this far! Either way it was an interesting project that I took part it. It's neat to think that I have been only 1 of hundreds of people who worked on 23 Things!

I knew a good bit of the stuff that we went over but there were most definately some things that i just didnt know! Some of this i will use in the future and some i may try to avoid. Library THing was an awesome discovery but the Technorati wasn't as great. I've also helepd some of my fellow employees in this task and that has helped me to understand the projects even more.

I am going to try to visit these sites often and perhaps continue to add new things i discover on my blog or bloglines.

Looks for e-books

well..i dont think my library has a subscription to either Netlibrary or overdrive and if we do i certainly could not figure out how to log ont an account. That being said i looked around the project Gutenberg website and try to find any selections i wanted. It seems that this website is pretty much limited to the classics and doesn'thave any current releases. This would be helpful to college age students and could provide a more relaxing way to read required books for a class. There werent too many titles i was looking to download, in fact i am not sure i would do very well with online reading or listening to stories. (it doesnt have the same feel). these resources could be very useful for a library and would provide a number of books right at a person's fingertips!

Podcasts...like whales and apple pie!

Pod casting is something i have never done before and i am the owner of an ipod. I am actually interested in invetigating this further...I am looking at podcast.net and chcking around for some podcasts i may like.

As luck would have it i found something i am loving..i typed in a favorite band on mine into the search bar and it popped up with Rad Rock Podcast! I am pretty excited that i found something i am going to enjoy and want to listen to each time a new session is released...i just noticed that these podcasts are from 2005 and i dont think they will be making anymore.

It was fun to try and i am glad that i found out how it all really works I also added some things to my bloglines

Funny we should have a youtube blog...i actually have a very silly little video clip of a friend and i and our adventures. I made it before he moved to Canada and then to England and sent it to him. It was put up on youtube and sometimes i go watch and get a kick out of it..so here it is!

There are some other videos on youtube that i like to watch...some of them are by people that make new videos each week and others are just random spur of the moment videos that people throw up there (like mine!). This next video is by a group called Smosh and if i am correct they won a youtube award last year for funny videos, this is one of my favorites of theirs. They make new ones a lot (www.smosh.com)

Surfing these websites is something i know i can handle. I am already familiar with Yahoo Answers and have actually asked questions and participated in some of the answering. It's a really neat website broken down into various categories like "arts" "beauty" "dinning out"and many others. Each is just filled with tons of questions that you can answer if you feel you can provide some helpful solutions! It's a fun way to help people with something that maybe you have experience with.

I am also familiar with a number of other winners including facebook, meebo, youtube, etc.

Until today i was completey unaware that this "free" word processor existed. Now the idea is just wonderful, you never have to worry about not having the most up to date microsoft office or anything but i dont think i will use this very often. Right now i have office 2007 and it works wonders for me because i understand it and i can do all kinds of things to jazz up my school work. In addition i am not sure how teachers would feel about getting these documents.

Either was the concept is pretty cool and the best part? ITS FREE!

That was pretty neat...when i first read the task i felt a little concerned...it sounded rather confusing. The good thing however is that it really was easy. I was neat too, i enjoyed seeing what people had to say and adding my thoughts as well. I think i may return to the site and look around some more.

Tricky Wikis

well i had only really been familiar with wikipedia.com before taking a look at the 23 things. infact my first semester of college i took a computer class and did a short presentation on wikiepdia and though the info is not always reiable it's a good source otherwise.

These library related wikis are pretty neat. You can sort through them and find suggestions for good books (something that library patrons may enjoy) the Library Success wiki gave a lot of links for running a library. Wht i mean by that is a lof of websites that can help a person better manage the various parts of the library (good programs, staff relations, reader advisory). All of those things can come in handy for both patrons and professionals. The best part is they are updated by people so you can find out what the general public feels OR what other employees of libraries have found!

well...after reading over that a few people had to say regarding where libraries are going i have selected to talk about Rick Anderson and his views of rowing our ibrary boats to web 2.0. Im not really sure how i feel about the whole idea...in fact i am not sure if i like it. Granted it is wonderful that the libraries are becoming more savy and working up to their potential in such a technological world but are they losing that special something? There is a comforting feeling walking into a library and knowing that if i go into the 900s in nonfiction i can find travel materials, books about wars and history or even a couple of maps....but what happens when it's all digital?

Will my kids have a library with an abundence of books or will there be a few in...print but a whole bunch online? So i applaud the libraries for moving foward but i cant help but wonder if there are some places that should keep an older vibe..

I am looking at this technorati site and it's amazing the shear number of blogs that they have tracked...100 million in the next 5 months! holy moly that number is astonding and you know there are so many more out there...i am going to give this whole "claiming" my blog a whirl so if something funny happens to this post that's why!

my thoughts on the craze...it was interesting to see that when i did a search for Learning 2.0 i got a lot of random stuff in the posts section but the blog section was much more centralized to what i was actually looking for! My favorites from the post section include:

Del.icio.us isn't really doing much for my tastebuds it seems...now the concept of the whole thing is rather interesting i suppose...I mean you can ultimately type in any word or words you want and see what kind of blogs or posts people have made regarding that topic. It's like a more personal version of google. I guess if you were going to do a research project this could help you sort through information to get a better grasp on the concept you were looking for however i am not sure it's all that reliable of a source. Perhaps i am just not thinking of the use in a broad enough sense...regardless if you were a person more interested in pursuing it's use it would be phenominal!

but for now i am just going to stick with google and perhaps the occasional tagging on photobucket or flickr.

Rollyo is pretty neat, i took a look around and found that it is a nice idea. Leave it up to people to help you, because they know beat! I love to travel and let me tell you when i travel i want to do it as cheaply as i can! I thought that perhaps allowing people to search the sites i use most can be helpful in perpetuating the idea that one can trave cheaply...here's how!

Of all of the "things" that i have done so far i think that librarything may be one of the neatest and most applicable in my everyday life. I have a bookshelf that is just overrun with books infact it has creeped down to the floor and spilled over into most of the room. Being able to catalog my books would be a life saver when i am trying to find out whether or not I own a book...this website really has every book i was looking for. I think i am going to go home tonight and just plop myself down in front of afore mentioned book shelf and do some categorizing!

Well i must first start apologizing for my lack of effort in the 23 things project. I have just been so busy working and trying to finish up my associates degree as quickly as i could so i can transfer to Towson...fall 2008 i'll be there. (I would have prefered sooner however it seems that they cancelled some classes i needed and i have to stay at FCC another semester)

Regardless of all that i am now going to do my best to finish up 23 things!

Well i've checkedout this MERLIN system and i subscribed to the RSS feed and to be totally honest I'm not sure i am going to be looking at it again when i finish the 23 things. I have done some looking around and have discovered that i can look at a blog all about the people who took part in 23 things and look at their pictures, kinda neat.

I found a video on that blog website that i thought was just pretty crazy, it was all about the various populations and some statistics surrounding them. Wow...

Technology and Me...

This past weekend i bought my very first lap top. I had a pc that i had purchased probably a year ago but this was a new investment and i must say i am pleased..

it has a huge hard drive and was comparable in quality to the high priced ones! It was only $599 plus the cost of anti virus software.

It has the vista operating system and a dual processor so it is new and definately up to date. i am loving it so far!

The Fun World of Flicker!

I have used some different kinds of photosharing websites (Photobucket and Snapfish) but i have never used this particular site.
What i thouht the most interesting thing about flickr was the tagging. I loved how they had all of the words written in varying sizes and it just looks really neat. You can select any of the tags and it will take you to photos that pertain to the word ou have selected.

I also love how you can have pictures sent to you and you can create things with the pictures like calanders and what not.

I do however feel that the website is laid out poorly and is a bit confusing to navigate. I can honestly say i will not be using the site for recreation.

First Post- Habits of Life Long Learners!

The seven habits of a life long learner...

Habit 1: Begin with the end in mind
Habit 2: Accept responsibility for your own learning
Habit 3: View problems as challenges
Habit 4: Have confidence in yourself as a competent, effective learner
Habit 5: Create your own learning toolbox
Habit 6: Use technology to your advantage
Habit 7: Teach/mentor others
Habit 7 ½: Play

The first and easiest thing for me to write about is the easiest task in the seven and a half...and that would be goal seven and a half...PLAYING!! I try to have fun with everything I do..whether it be work or school or just my free time. Truly i think this is one of the most important things because if you can't have fun and make a good time of everything that you are doing or you'll struggle through life. Laugh with others, laugh at yourself and most importantly don't take things too seriously....

The thing that i would have the most difficulty achieving has got to be goal number one...I am not very good at doing things with an end result in mind. Sure the larger things in life are planned ahead..like college and career goals...but the day to day things are not done with the end in mind. I take things as they come and prefer not to get too preoccupied with end results...if you look too far to the end i feel you may miss what is going by you. It's like a road trip...your goal is to get to your destination but if you don't stop along the way who knows...you could miss the World's Largegest Yarn Ball!
